Eastford maintains the New England tradition of town meetings where every voter, as well as certain non-resident property owners, has an oppurtunity to participate in approval of budgets for both the Board of Education and Board of Selectmen, to have a say in setting the tax rate, and to propose or act on local ordinances.
Budgets are acted on during the first 15 days in May, in preparation for the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1st. Taxes are based on the ownership of property as of the previous October 1st, which is an arbitrary date but is used for that purpose by all the state's 169 towns.
After reports of the Town's Auditor and its officials have been printed in the Annual Town Report, the Selectmen set a date for the Annual Town Meeting. Other business can be transacted at that time, as well as during the May session, provided notice thereof is included in calls for the meetings. Special Town Meetings are held as neccessary, either on the initiative of the Selectmen or on the petition of voters.
Notice of Town Meetings is given by publishing a written warning signed by the Selectmen in a newspaper published in the town or having a general circulation in the town and by posting the warning on the town's bulletin board at the Town Office Building, Lower Level. The warning of the town meeting must be published and posted at least 5 days previous to holding the meeting. As a courtesy, warnings of town meetings are also posted at the Eastford Post Office.
